Welcome to all my spaces… Especially to my DeviantART and Picasa galleries, with material not necessarily available at the local picture gallery. Of course flickr is still available, but due to the 200 image cap for free accounts it will probably not be extensively updated, but what is there will remain.

The site http://gandoon.wordpress.com will in the mean time act as a temporary stand-in for this site (provided that I actually post anything there).

Within a few months I hope to migrate this page once again, this time hopefully to the Computer Society at Lund University’s; newly acquired server pool. A personal physical or virtualised server might become available there quite soon. That would be really great since it has become a little bit annoying with a server running around the clock at home. Further I will move quite soon, to Japan or elsewhere and then it will not be feasible to run a private server at home.
I also have a page at http://gandoon.wordpress.com nowadays. The reason is that I might use it as an intermediate while setting up the new services and when the main http://www.gandoon.com is down (as might have been noticed) is quite often. The server is mainly running daytime CET until further notice.

Despite the fact that it seems as if whatever I do I break something. My best glass vodka bottle gets knocked over (of course filled up with expensive drops) and breaks into about a million tiny pieces, my pants get wedged in the toilet door while trying to stand up after picking up something I dropped, and torn to shreds. My luck seems to be very carefully portioned so that I wouldn’t feel to happy at any given time. (Oh, what a sight… Too happy?)

Despite the fact that after a wonderful onset of Spring around here, today it snows!!

Despite the fact that I haven’t heard from some old friends I was hoping would contact me. Leaving me wondering whether I have done something wrong.

In a few months I will have my MSc, my engineering degree. I have just about made it…
Just a little further.

Will it happen?
Will I return to Japan, this wonderful country that captured my senses in so many ways? This… second home of mine.
I keep my hopes up, it seems as if I have quite a good chance of going.
The ”Not too much happiness” clause above unfortunately seems to ground me for the ”Golden Week” though, I don’t have the funds to go then

Being a very busy man these days of course I also need to mention the concerts I will do with my choir, Lund University Male Voice Choir and the great baritone Peter Mattei on Thursday in Helsingborg and on Friday in Malmö.

I have acquired a new computer, an older PowerMac G4 with significantly more RAM than my current web-server, otherwise it sports similar performance at lower noise cost than the Sun Ultra-10 that serves Gandoon at the moment. Since my server is residing quite close to my sleeping quarters this obviously means that I once again seriously consider a hardware replacement. This further means that at some point during the summer Gandoon will go offline for a brief period of time.

This should actually have been a throughout positive review of this camera if it had not been for certain drawbacks I have discovered. They were not visible at first but through the first months of operation it became apparent that not everything is as good as it superficially may seem, and as the months pass by it became even more blatantly obvious that not everything about this little darling is equally wonderful. A particularly irritating ”Feature” (for computer people, read: ”bug” Others, read: ”misconstruction”) is the fact that the cameras lens admits large amounts of dust. The dust further gathers close to the focal plane, making the dust particles more or less clearly visible in the images (it may very well gather at other points in the machine as well where it, this far, doesn’t affect the image). The particles are clearly visible, especially at small apertures, making long focal lengths at the long end of the zoom range, which have smaller aperture span than the wide angle range, particularly sensitive to this problem. This might not have been such a big problem if this camera had been a SLR with detachable lenses, but as the camera has a fixed zoom lens it is just about impossible to take care of the dust on your own, as pressurised air and other such careful external emergency solutions proves ineffective.

I am both relieved, by knowing I’m not alone having this problem, and getting more upset by seeing this American guy having problems with his G7… I have exactly the same problem. I bought my camera in Japan while I was working there last Christmas. Today I have a SHITLOAD of dust inside the camera, and I have all the time kept the camera in an extra bag or similar to protect it from this kind of situation. We can all see that this strategy obviously failed. The most evil thing of all is that I get the impression that Canon does not issue ”Worldwide” warranties but rather some sort of regionally tied policies, and thus for me, being a European citizen my warranty, and in practice, my camera is sort of worthless, unless I for some reason go to Japan within the one year warranty period and have the opportunity to have a warranty repair while being there. I still have not confirmed if the warranties actually work this way. Hopefully they are a little bit more generous than the information they initially give out may hint, as I am fairly confident that I would get a warranty repair for this kind of problem as the American I mentioned above actually got a warranty cleaning of his camera and it seems to have worked for him.

All server responsibilities now has been transferred to the server ”Bartok” and a transfer of the physical location of the machine might occur within the next month, and at that moment a new IP number will be assigned to it.

Jag har precis kommit hem till Sverige efter att jag bott i Japan i fem månader och skrivit ett paper på företaget KDDI R&D i Saitama, norr om Tokyo.
Under tiden har denna server varit nerstängd och en tid varit ersatt av en annan maskin som gått under ovanstående titel.

Jag har nu långt framskridna planer på att försöka återkomma till Japan under året.
Förhoppningsvis kan jag få vistas där ytterligare ett år, eller mer.

Som så många andra har även jag upptäckt YouTube. Ett otroligt smidigt sätt att slippa behöva stå för bandbredden själv för strömmad video.

Skulle du vilja leva i ett samhälle där du inte ens får läsa en bok utan att betala licensavgifter? Där du inte får låna en bok av din vän eller ens av din man eller hustru? Där du ständigt övervakas av myndigheter och säkerhetspolis? Det är inte alltför långt till ett sådant samhälle idag. Se bara på hela den hysteri som uppstått kring upphovsrätt i alla möjliga och omöjliga sammanhang i dag, hur kommersiella organisationer förföljer privatpersoner (läs Antipiratbyrån, IFPI, RIAA och MPAA). Läs texterna, tänk efter och skapa dig din egen uppfattning.

Problem som kan uppstå är således att www.gandoon.com går ner någon gång under de närmaste månaderna för att inte komma upp förrän den nya lösningen är permanentad.

Dessutom kan man ju le och till sist inse att världen ännu inte är hopplöst förlorad. I denna artikel som förvisso är en och en halv månad gammal så berättas om en familj som får sitt försvar i en rättsprocess de dragits in i av Recording Industry Association of America – RIAA, en organisation som allmänt är ungefär lika välsedd (läs hatad) som Moving Pictures Association of America – MPAA, Antipiratbyrån och Spanska inkvisitionen, betalat av ett (stort) kanadensiskt skivbolag med motivationen från dess VD: ”The current actions of the RIAA are not in my artists’ best interests” och vidare kommenterar han USA:s förkärlek för rättsprocesser med: ”Litigation is not ‘artist development’. Litigation is a deterrent to creativity and passion and it is hurting the business I love.”
Läs artikeln, den säger trots sin ringa längd en hel del om hur galet det blir när ren girighet går överstyr och stora organisationer slår ner på privatpersoner för att de laddat ned musik eller film. Det skulle inte förvåna mig om de slagit ner på någon som agerat med eget vinstintresse (försäljning av pirat-CD eller dylikt) och i ett sådant fall så är det väl få som inte skulle tycka de gör ett bra jobb när de sätter dit förövarna. Men när de ger sig på den lilla människan som laddat ner musik för att han/hon tycker det är för dyrt att gå och köpa allt eller bara vill provlyssna, då blir det svårt att inte bli klassade som onda.
(Hur det gått i målet har jag ingen aning om, men man kan ju alltid hoppas att domslutet var konstruktivt.)

Ytterligare lite om musik och media.
Man kan tycka vad man vill om Courtney Love och tro vad man vill om vad som står i räkneexemplet i början av denna skrift. Men om man orkar läsa texten så får man intrycket av någon faktiskt tänkt till innan talet/texten (ursprungligen skall detta enligt sidan ha varit ett tal vid Digital Hollywood online entertainment conference) framfördes/publicerades. Många som är trötta på stora skivbolag och liknande som drar privatpersoner och mjukvarutillverkare inför rätta kommer nog att le när de läser stycket Technology is not piracy ungefär en tredjedel ner på sidan. Och jag har definitivt samma inställning som förmedlas ytterligare en bit längre ner: ”I will allow millions of people to get my music for nothing if they want and hopefully they’ll be kind enough to leave a tip if they like it.”

I början på året presenterade Apple sina nya prylar, såväl mjuka som hårda. En av de lite större mjuka nyheterna var en ny webeditor till iLife-serien som är hårt integrerad i Apples .Mac-koncept. Att applikationen förmodligen ogenerat bryter mot flertalet av de standarder som finns (jämför Apples podcastimplementation i iTunes som bryter mot fler standarder än den följer) kan man kanske glömma några minuter medan man säger OOH! och AAAH! om hur man till synes fånigt enkelt kan skapa en ganska snygg och relativt dynamisk hemsida (med .Mac, det framgår inte om man kan använda den med andra tjänsteleverantörer).

Tyvärr verkar Apple alltmer knyta sina iLife-applikationer till .Mac och iTunes Music Store. Det betyder att det blir svårare att använda de enkla och trevliga iLife-applikationerna fullt ut tillsammans med andra tjänsteleverantörer. Jag själv till exempel använder inte och ser ingen anledning att använda iDisc och .Mac emedan jag erbjuder mig själv samma funktionalitet på mina web och filservrar och till detta har en mycket välfungerande e-postleverantör.

Det skall mycket till innan jag ger upp…

Med detta inleds en ny era vad gäller Gandoons bildgalleri, med fri programvara från Sourceforge som helt enkelt kallas Gallery har jag kunnat skapa ett databasdrivet system som inte släpper ut mina bilder högupplöst utan mitt medgivande, men ändå ger folk möjlighet att titta på mina bilder.
Detta är något jag velat ha en längre tid men inte hittat någon bra lösning på, förrän nu (hoppas jag i alla fall). Som hobbyfotograf vill man ju kuna visa upp sig på något sätt och jag tycker att min egen hemsida är ju ett ypperligt ställe

Dessutom har jag lyckats fixa så att mod_rewrite verkligen skriver om länkar så att sidan presenterar läsbara permalänkar och liknande.
